REBECCA WARREN
Man and the dark
Man and the dark, 2016, is a large-scale bronze and steel sculpture. A pair of naked legs in full stride in high, heavy shoes is supported on a platform with bronze-cast wheels set at various angles, which oddly, and with some pathos, counteract the forward momentum of the legs. Placed on a high and imposing steel block, painted in a glossy milk-chocolate brown, the legs are raised up to and above eye-level. Warren says of the work that she had in mind a kind of ‘Boccioni-type repeat form’, with the sculpture mixing the competing trajectories and energies of what she describes as ‘human effort and folly’.
