Toby Ziegler
Self-portrait as reclining nude II
Toby Ziegler’s Self-Portrait as reclining nude II, 2017, was inspired by Henri Matisse’s painting Large Reclining Nude, 1935, as well as a series of related bronze sculptures. Departing from a digitally modelled prototype, Ziegler produced a clay model by hand which mimicked the aesthetic of a 3D printed artefact. In an interview from 2017, he explains: ‘I’m making these sculptures out of clay, coils of clay, building them up slowly, then scanning them then printing them. So, you’ll end up with these coils within coils, and they’ll be reproductions of these clunky, hand-made objects. Coiled objects. But then within that, there’s this kind of mechanical grain. That feels very similar to what I do in the painting in relation to degraded JPGs and pixels.’
