Contact
Contact, 2012, aligns two large, rectangular sandstone tables in a subdued pink. Upon one is placed a polished bronze cylinder which reflects its surroundings. The work revolves around a recurring subject in Almond’s practice: that of the Moon. The title, Contact, refers to the first word spoken by mankind on the lunar ground. The date and time, carved respectively across each sandstone table top, refers to the precise moment that Neil Armstrong first stepped on the Moon in 1969, whilst the mass of bronze, which is filled with lead, corresponds to the impressionable weight created on its surface by Armstrong in his space suit. This simple juxtaposition inscribes itself in Almond’s ongoing, poetic effort to apprehend and reflect upon history and culture, and their relationship with nature.
