REBECCA WARREN

Man and the dark

Man and the dark, 2016, is a large-scale bronze and steel sculpture. A pair of naked legs in full stride in high, heavy shoes are supported on a platform with bronze-cast wheels set at various angles, which oddly and with some pathos, counteract the forward momentum of the legs. Placed on a high and imposing steel block, varnished in a glossy milk chocolate brown, the legs are raised up to and above eye-level. Warren says of the work that she had in mind a kind of “Boccioni-type repeat form", with the sculpture mixing the competing trajectories and energies of what she describes as "human effort and folly".

The British artist Rebecca Warren (born 1965 in London) makes sculptures, assemblages and constructions in a variety of materials including clay, bronze, steel and neon. She has said about her work that “it comes from a strange nowhere, then gradually something comes out into the light. There are impulses, half-seen shapes, things that might have stuck with you from decades ago, as well as more recently. It‘s all stuff in the world going through you as a filter...”
