Bibliothek Günther Förg

The Library of Günther Förg

Throughout his lifetime, Günther Förg built three libraries in his studios and apartments in Switzerland and Germany. The Stiftung zur Förderung zeitgenössischer Kunst in Weidingen acquired one of these libraries, containing approximately 3000 books from Förg’s collection. The library can be visited by appointment.

The library is situated in the historic centre of Weidingen, directly adjacent to the parish church (St. Mary’s Pilgrimage Church). With an impressive ceiling ceiling height of 4 meters, the new building is divided into exhibition and library spaces. Natural lighting is provided by large window façades and a glazed roof.

Günther Förg (1952–2013)

Over a career spanning five decades, Günther Förg developed a distinctive and prolific body of work, including experiments in abstraction and monochrome painting, against the general trend of figurative painting predominant in Germany in the 1980s. Wall paintings, sculptures, large format photographs, portraits and architectural views, as well as drawings and graphics, executed in a range of mediums, bear witness to the innovative diversity of the artist’s approach. Universal concepts of form, mass, proportion, rhythm and structure constitute a common thread in his work. From the late 2000s, Förg’s painting took a brighter and more gestural turn, resulting from an intuitive approach to colour and composition.
