Darren Almond

Contact

Spanning photography, film, installation, painting and sculpture, Darren Almond’s practice explores ideas of time, space, history and memory, and how these relate. The artist unearths the symbolic and emotional potential of objects, places and situations, producing works charged with historical as well as personal resonance.

Contact, 2012 aligns two large, rectangular sandstone tables in a subdued pink, upon one of which is placed a polished bronze cylinder which reflects its surroundings. The work revolves around a recurring subject in Almond’s practice: that of the Moon. The title, Contact, refers to the first word spoken by mankind on the lunar ground. The date and time, which is carved across both sandstone table tops, is the precise moment that Neil Armstrong first stepped on the Moon in 1969, whilst the mass of the bronze, which is actually filled with lead, equals the impressionable weight created on its surface by Neil Armstrong and his space suit. This simple juxtaposition inscribes itself in Almond’s ongoing, poetic effort to apprehend, and reflect upon, history, culture, and its relationship with nature.
